As a new player in The Lord of the Rings Online, one of the first consumable cooked foods a player comes across is this recipe for “Fried Mushrooms.” It is frequently given as a reward for quests (see a mostly full list here), and is exceptionally easy to make if you have both a farmer and cook, as crafters.
For today’s recipe, I used two pounds of white button mushrooms, sautéed (“fried”) in a saucepan with butter. This simple dish is flavorful and rich, and is made even better with the addition of allspice as a garnish.
At the end of the recipe, I give a “Gammer Brigman” tip on how to modify the dish to include fresh spinach from your garden. Since mushrooms are best in spring, and you can often harvest spinach in early spring, there’s a good chance you will be able to combine the two into an elegant vegetarian-friendly variation of the master recipe.
Fried Mushrooms: The Lord of the Rings Online
This easy, meatless snack is a satisfying dish for any hungry traveller.
Ingredients
- 2 Tbl. salted butter
- 2 lbs. whole button mushrooms
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- dash of allspice
Instructions
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and add mushrooms. Cover with a lid (leaving a crack for steam to escape) and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Mushrooms will be done when they are tender to the touch and juicy.
Remove from heat and sprinkle with salt and pepper, to taste. Transfer to a serving platter and sprinkle with a dash of allspice.
Notes
Optional: while not in the master recipe in LOTRO’s cooking panel, fried mushrooms go particularly well with fresh garden spinach. If you have any, throw a couple of handfuls in at the very end, just as the mushrooms are starting to become juicy and tender. Stir to combine and cook for several minutes, or until spinach has wilted.
