For anyone who has played The Lord of the Rings Online, Holly Hornblower’s “Spoiled Pie” run quests are ubiquitous with the Shire. The player is sent to receive “spoiled” pies and preserve Holly’s good name, travelling as far as Needlehole and Stock to retrieve them.
While the quests function as the traditional MMO “router” quests, they can be completed in one go, and reward the player with the “Pie-Runner” title and this Blueberry Pie Recipe. As soon as I decided I was writing a cookbook based on The Lord of the Rings Online, I knew Hornblower’s Pie had to be in it. It embodies the silly, everyday woes of simple hobbit folk: spoiled pies? Unthinkable! To quote Holly, “I simply can’t allow people to eat bad pies!”
Below is my recipe inspired not by the “spoiled” pies of this famous quest chain, but the Blueberry Pie recipe Holly bestows upon the player after successfully retrieving her baked goods. It features two pints of blueberries, an all-butter crust, and the iconic lattice-work of the in-game quest item.
Holly Hornblower's Prized Blueberry Pie, The Lord of the Rings Online
Recipe adapted using Hornblower's Pie Recipe in The Lod of the Rings Online.
Ingredients
- All Butter Pie Crust:
- * 2 1/2 cups flour, more for dusting
- * 2 sticks of unsalted butter, cut into one inch cubes and frozen
- * 1 teaspoon salt
- * 1 teaspoon sugar
- * 2-5 tablespoons ice water
- Pie Filling:
- * 2 pints fresh blueberries, washed
- * 2/3 cup sugar
- * 3 Tbl. cornstarch
- * 1 lemon, juiced
- * 1.5 Tbl. butter, melted
- Special Equipment:
- * 1 (9-inch) pie pan
- * Pastry cutter
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350F. In a food processor, combine flour, butter, salt, and sugar, pulsing until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add very cold (ice) water slowly. Just as the ball begins to come together, turn off the processor and transfer dough to a floured surface.
Shape dough into two round discs and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate until ready to use.
To make the filling, combine blueberries, sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, and melted butter. Mix to combine.
Roll out dough so that it fits your 9-inch pie pan with an inch or so of dough hanging over the side.
Fill pie crust with blueberry filling.
Roll out second disc of dough and cut into even, 1.5-inch lattice strips. I use an edged pastry cutter for this step.
Place half of the cut pastry on top of the pie going in one direction, about .5- to 1-inch apart. Using the second half of your pastry, weaving under and over each vertical strip to create a "lattice effect."
Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the blueberry mixture is bubbling.
Remove from oven and cool for 15 minutes before serving.
